Where do you practice/play?
All home games and practices are currently held at LaHaye Ice Center in Lynchburg, VA. A new practice facility in Charlottesville is anticipated to open in November 2026. Upon its completion, the majority of practices will transition to the new outdoor rink, with occasional sessions continuing at Liberty.
What is the time commitment like?
The team typically competes in one to two games per weekend. Breaks in the schedule are observed during home football games, final exams, and sorority recruitment. Each week includes one optional off-ice training session and one on-ice practice pending player and rink availability.
How long does the season run? In what league do you play?
The team competes in ACHA Division II within the WACCHL. The season runs from early September through mid-February, followed by league playoffs in late February.
Who do you play?
The team regularly competes against programs such as Virginia Tech, Georgetown University, High Point University, George Washington University, North Carolina State, West Chester University (PA), and the University of North Carolina. The schedule also includes select out-of-division matchups against opponents such as the University of Maryland and the University of Delaware.
Is there a minimum GPA to play on the team?
As club student-athletes at the University of Virginia, participants are expected to maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA in order to compete, in accordance with ACHA guidelines.
How much does it cost to play?
We strive to keep annual dues as low as possible. Dues are approximately $300 per year and include a team hockey bag, jersey, socks, shells, ice time for practices and games, as well as transportation. If there are any concerns regarding dues, multiple resources at the University of Virginia are available to help alleviate financial burden and ensure accessibility for all players.
How does the team travel?
The team travels via carpools organized by the executive board. No personal vehicle is required, as transportation is coordinated to ensure ample rides with upperclassmen drivers. Drivers are also reimbursed for gas expenses.
What level of hockey do most players have coming in?
Most players have experience with a mix of club and high school hockey, but we welcome players of all skill levels. Our roster has included former semi-professional players, as well as individuals who are new to the sport and developing their game.
Is attendance mandatory?
Players are expected to attend most games and practices, but as college students we understand if things occasionally come up!
